Donald Jensen, MD , Rush University Medical Center

Donald M. Jensen, MD is the Richard B. Capps Professor of Medicine and Director of the Section of Hepatology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois .

 

Dr. Jensen received his M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1972. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, in 1975. He served as Chief Medical Resident in 1975-76. From 1976-78 he was the Pillsbury Liver Research fellow at King's College Hospital in London, England, under the direction of Dr. Roger Williams.

 

In 1978, Dr. Jensen became a member of the Section of Digestive Diseases at Rush Medical Center, Chicago. In 1992, he was appointed to the position of Director of Clinical Hepatology, and in 1996, he was made Director of the newly created Section of Hepatology at Rush.

 

Dr. Jensen is a member of numerous medical societies including the AASLD and AGA. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.   He has served on committees for the Federated Societies of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and on the Hepatitis Educators Committee of the American Digestive Health Foundation. He is a member of the AASLD Practice Guidelines Committee. He is a past-president of the Chicago Society of Gastroenterology, a board member of the Illinois Chapter of the American Liver Foundation , recently appointed to the National American Liver Foundation Board of Directors, and a founding board member of the Chicago Liver Group and the National Transplant Society. He is a member of the Hepatitis Advisory Panels for Hoffmann-LaRoche and Amgen pharmaceuticals.

 

Dr. Jensen has published over 60 articles in the medical literature in such journals as the New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology. He is currently principal investigator for over 12 clinical trials in the treatment of hepatitis B or hepatitis C. His research area of interest includes studies of host and viral factors influencing responsiveness to antiviral agents.

Scott Cotler, MD , University of Illinois at Chicago

Scott Cotler, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Hepatology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan and received his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago, where he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine. He went on to a fellowship in gastroenterology at RUSH and then completed a hepatology fellowship at the University of Washington. He divides his time between a busy hepatology practice, clinical research, and teaching. The majority of his clinical practice is devoted to viral hepatitis and liver transplantation.  

 

Dr. Cotler has published extensively on the topic of hepatitis C. His publications include studies on viral kinetics, cytokine responses to interferon therapy, hepatitis C and iron, hepatitis C in renal transplant candidates, patients' and physicians' views on hepatitis C, and interferon therapy for liver transplant recipients. His current research focuses on hepatitis C and HIV, medical decision making in hepatitis C, hepatitis C viral kinetics, and hepatitis C post-transplant. Dr. Cotler is a member of the Illinois Chapter's Medical Advisory Committee.

Helen S. Te, MD, University of Chicago Hospitals

Topic:   Treatment Options

 

Dr. Helen S. Te works as a Transplant Hepatologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago Hospitals.   In her position, she manages a large number of patients with various liver diseases, evaluates patients who require liver transplantation, and provides care to liver transplant recipients. Her responsibilities also include teaching medical students, medical residents and gastroenterology fellows, as well as conducting clinical research in different areas of Hepatology.   Dr. Te received her internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. She then completed her fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Chicago, and joined the faculty in 2000.

 

Dr. Te is an active member in many professional organizations, such as the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Transplant Physicians, Gastroenterology Research Group, and Chicago Society of Gastroenterologists.

Dr. Steven Flamm, MD, Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Topic:   Indication for Transplantation

 

Dr. Flamm currently serves as the Associate Professor of Medicine and Surgery at Feinberg Medical School , Northwestern University and as Associate in Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. Flamm received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Duke University in 1985 and his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1989. He completed his internship and residency in Medicine at The Beth Israel Hospital, Boston Harvard Medical School, where he also served as Chief Resident in Medicine from 1993-1994. Dr. Flamm is the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at Northwestern and has an active clinical research program involving chronic hepatitis B and C virus infections.

 

Dr. Flamm holds memberships in various professional societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the American Society of Transplant Physicians. He is currently the Region 7 representative to the Liver and Intestine Committee of UNOS and is the chairman of the Regional Review Board. He also serves as a Medical Advisor to the Illinois Chapter of the American Liver Foundation. His major research interests relating to hepatitis C are treatment and epidemiology, pathological heterogeneity, immunosuppression after liver transplantation, and obesity.

Mike Ziegler is a Vice President and Director of Specialty Pharmacy Services at Damer & Cartwright Pharmacy. Over the past 12 years, he has assisted hundreds of hepatitis C patients and transplant recipients coordinate their prescription care. Mr. Ziegler actively works with the American Liver Foundation – Illinois Chapter to educate and assist patients in the financial aspects of healthcare.

 

Mr. Ziegler is well educated and experienced in the financial aspects of hepatitis C and transplant care. He is available to provide information regarding insurance laws, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, manufacturer financial assistance programs, government assistant programs, and other issues that pertain to the financial aspects of healthcare.
