In the past decade, researchers have drastically advanced the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of liver disease. Thanks to research, hepatitis B and C, serious liver diseases that account for as many as 18,000 deaths each year, are now identifiable and treatable; an effective and widely available vaccine for hepatitis B has been developed; liver transplants are saving lives; newly developed liver-assist mechanisms are buying time for patients waiting for donor livers; and new and promising drugs are being developed to treat all liver diseases.

Since its inception in 1976, the American Liver Foundation has awarded over $5 million in medical research grants and has provided up-to-date information to hundreds of thousands of professionals, patients, and families. The Foundation is the only national, voluntary non-profit health agency dedicated to preventing, treating, and curing hepatitis and other liver diseases. Since it is estimated that more than half of all liver diseases can be prevented by acting upon knowledge we already have, the Foundation reaches out to a public and professional audience through an aggressive program of education and research. The American Liver Foundation believes that liver disease patients should know every treatment option available.
